The amounts of SO2 and NOx emissions from anthropogenic sources are considerably greater than those from natural sources. SOx and NOx cause acid rain in that they react with water to form acids, thus causing acidic rains. NOx results from the nitrogen in the atmospheres which combines with oxygen in hot engines or other combustion involving nitrogen compounds, while SOx results from burning of sulfur compounds.
