Mr. Nicolas is putting up strings of blue and white lights for the holidays. The ratio of blue to white is 5 to 6. If he has 77 strings, how many strings are white lights? Can somebody please help me, I do not understand how to work out this problem.

To answer this question, you will need to use a part to part to whole ratio. The ratio of blue to white strings is only a part to part ratio.

The only other piece of information with a number is 77 total strings. Because of this we need to find the total number of strings in the original, simple ratio.

Blue:white:total or white:total
5 to 6 to 11 Or 6:11

From here we create an equivalent ratio using 77 total.

5:6:11 = 35:42:77 or 42:77

There are 42 white strings.
