Locks on any canal are used only for A. Locks are gates that block off sections of water—they are used to move boats from one body of water to another when the heights are different. The boat approaches from one side of the canal. One gate is opened while the other is shut, and the boat goes in. Then both are shut, and the water level is lowered or raised to equal the other side of the canal. The other gate is then opened, and the boat goes out.
