This excerpt shows an example of paradox. A paradox is a contradictory statement that nevertheless has some truth to it. In this case, the paradox is that Jordan believes large parties to be more intimate than small parties. Common sense would tell you that less people make for an atmosphere that is more intimate. However, she claims that in small parties, it is harder to have privacy, which is true, making the statement paradoxical.
