At the time of the Civil War, 84% of Southerners were involved in agriculture compared to 40% of Northerners. Southerners however, focused on cash crops and were less equipped than their Northern counterparts.
This ensured that the North produced more food than the South. For instance, the North was producing half of the corn in the U.S. as well as 75% of the wheat and 7/8 of the oats.
