The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 contradicted the Missouri Compromise of 1820 because the Missouri Compromise had outlawed slavery in territories north of the Missouri Compromise line. The Kansas-Nebraska Act instead allowed those territories to decide on the issue of slavery by popular sovereignty.
