Some abolitionists grew more militant because they were sick of slavery and thought it was a disgusting practice. They also realized the South was not going to give slavery up through non-violent acts. As time went on and nothing changed, they grew annoyed and wanted freedom, so they became more militant and wanted to take more actions. This calmed down after Abraham Lincoln officially ratified the Thirteenth Amendment which outlawed slavery in the United States.
