Spiral arms are regions of strong star formation and are more prominent in blue light. These regions extend from the center of the spiral and barred spiral galaxies.
Spiral arms are the result of transient instabilities in the gases that promote star formation and generate turbulence. In other words spiral arms contain the main ingredients required for the formation of new star, that is lots of gases.
