While some animals hibernate to escape frigid winter temperatures, others aestivate, basically "sleeping"
through periods of heat and/or drought, when food and water are scarce. The Latin term "aestivation"
means "summer sleep." Just like animals that hibernate, aestivating animals go into a sleep-like state in
which they experience a drop in breathing and heart rate. However, aestivating animals do not need to
utilize as much stored energy from food as do animals that hibernate.
